Children's rights are the human rights of children with particular attention to the rights of special protection and care afforded to the young, including their right to association with both biological parents, human identity as well as the basic needs for food, universal state-paid education, health care and criminal laws appropriate for the age and development of the child.
There are 4 basic rights of children. In 1992, India ratified the United Nations Convention on Rights of the Child. The Charter of Child Rights (CRC) is built on the principle that "ALL children are born with fundamental freedoms and ALL human beings have some inherent rights". The Charter confers the following basic rights on all children across the world:
- The right to survival- to life, health, nutrition, name and nationality
- The right to development- to education, care, leisure, recreation
- The right to protection- from exploitation, abuse, neglect
- The right to participation- to expression, information, thought and religion
The HOPE Kolkata Foundation is committed to provide sustainable development for the underprivileged and vulnerable population with special focus on children and person living in difficult circumstances by acting as facilitator through community development through provision of education, vocational training, health awareness and service, shelter, nutrition, counseling, recreation, rescue & rehabilitation, repatriation, awareness on rights, emergency relief, capacity building, fund raising through socio, economic and spiritual development regardless of race, sex, religion or politics to achieve goals.
Recreation and play is fundamental to all aspects of child development and is a key component in preserving community and culture, in the broadest sense.
Play is valuable in children's physical exercise and growth and in their development of motor skills. Children playing together present rich opportunities for social, moral and emotional development and hence for the development of their personality and their ability to handle stress and conflict. It is in free play that children learn to understand and co-operate with others. The quintessential nature of play is that it is initiated and controlled by children and this element, and the resulting social competence, has been critically linked to the development of resiliency in children and youth at risk.
Natural outdoor play environments offer important opportunities for children to begin to value the environment. Through play children explore cause and effect and gradually build a knowledge base that cannot be taught through structured learning activities. Play is a vehicle
for the development of creativity and flexibility, invaluable qualities in human development.

- THE EVENT:-
Keeping this in mind, HOPE Kolkata Foundation organized an awareness campaign, which promoted a child’s right to recreation and development. This campaign was held on 21st October, 2010 at Kalighat temple area. Children from Kalighat Gurudwara Park and Kalighat temple area participated in the event. This campaign was organized to make the guardians/parents as well as the children aware about this fundamental right of a child and how it helps in the overall development of a child.
Different categories of games were organized for children of different age groups ranging from 4-16 years. Games like spoon race, basketball, biscuit race, musical chair, ring the target, potato race, etc. were arranged for the children. The kids were very enthusiastic and excited about the event and participated actively. Approximately 55 children participated in the event. A few of them also volunteered to help us conduct the event more smoothly. The parents/guardians were equally enthusiastic about the whole event and motivated and encouraged their wards wholeheartedly.
At the end of the day, the campaign was successful in spreading the message among the children and parents. Recreation is not just about playing, it is fundamentally about protecting their right to be free to explore and discover the physical and social world around them on their own terms. Hope Kolkata Foundation will keep on organizing such campaigns in future which will make the children aware of their basic fundamental rights.
